How to Get a Good Part Time Job

Many people are finding themselves in an extremely difficult position these days. They have spent the better part of their adult life working in one industry or the other, acquiring skills and expanding their abilities in a chosen profession in order to make the best income they possibly can. It’s what you are supposed to do. Suddenly, the industry dries up. Jobs are shipped overseas or simply cease to exist. What to do? How can a person rebuild themselves in a totally new work environment, without an appropriate resume that reflects time spent on the job they are considering applying for?

Well, it is possible. But it will require some intense effort and, most importantly, some brutal honesty. The tenure earned at a particular job may or may not be applicable, so you have to expand your personal skills set. And that will require you to take a good, hard look at what you really are capable of. This is some advice in how to get a good part time job.

Step One - Sit down and take a look at what you have to offer. What are your acquired skills? What are you really good at? This last question is maybe the most important of all, because many people today have been able to find part time work based on skills they have acquired in their various hobbies. Office managers end up finding work doing carpentry repair because they always liked fixing up their home by themselves. Stay-at-home moms find part time jobs in retail stores that specialize in children’s products because they know how a young mind works.

Step Two - Write up an outline of all the things you like to do, along with things you are good at. These are not always the same thing, so make two separate lists. By doing this, you may find some convergence between the two and those will be the avenues to pursue hardest. Categorize these skills into the terms that appear in any job search medium - accounting to warehousing and all jobs in between. Write up a new personal resume using these guidelines.

Step Three - Do a job search using these terms, starting with any part time jobs that fit your “best of” qualifications. You may be surprised at the number of other industries that are associated with what you used to do as part of your previous job. Keep an open mind at this point and really read the job ads, either in the newspaper or online. See if there’s any way that you can convince an employer that you have actual experience in whatever skill they’re looking for. Also keep in mind that many employers today are more open to trading life experience for actual on-the-job qualifications, so pursue good leads with a positive attitude that you are the right person for the job.

Step Four - Don’t give up. This is easy to say and hard to hear. Especially when a job search lasts for several months while the bills pile up and the family gets stressed out. But persistence will be the main aspect of success in these volatile times and this applies to everything from finding the right person to talk to at a place of business that is hiring to calling and emailing and doing whatever it takes to distinguish yourself from the thousands of others who may be applying for the same position. This is how to get a good part time job.
