How to Get into a Good High School
Many parents overlook the reality that not all high schools in all districts are graded alike. It is also a fact that not all teaching methods are similar. inspect the local school system’s ratings to make sure your child gets into a highly accredited high school with qualified teachers. This will help you to learn how to get into a good high school.
1. Make sure that you keep up–to-date with the high school's rule and regulations. Find out if your child will be able to attend a school out of your school district.
2. Check out the school's rating in comparison to other high schools in the same district. Find out the cost and procedure of sending your child to an out-of-district school.
3. Make an appointment with the school principal and explain your interest in locating an excellent high school. Ask to be taken on a guided tour of the school and to sit in on a few classes in session.
4. Ask questions about the school’s teaching procedures. Does the teacher merely read from the book and then give tons of homework? Do the classes require student participation? Are the classes open to questions and answers? This is important and makes sure your child does not get bored in class and spending the learning time doodling or sending notes to friends.
5. Find out how many students are in each class. Inquire about specific teaching methods used for children who are advanced as opposed to those who might need special teaching methods. A child who is exceptionally bright would easily get bored if the class is not geared to a faster teaching method that also entails class projects.
6. Get information about the school's extra curricular activities. Do they have a baseball team? This is important if your child wants to be a cheerleader. How about swimming. Do they have a swimming pool and swimming competitions? Many future Olympic gold medalists received their early training in a high school swimming pool. A Band or Orchestra would be equally important for the child who is a musically inclined.
7. Make sure your child will be challenged in all areas of learning and not only in the classroom. Make sure you check out all areas of education when finding out how to get into a good high school. Is there a school newspaper that is run by students? This is important for those students, who are not interested in sports, but enjoys writing. Look for a school that fits your child’s academic interests to keep them from not getting bored.
8. Check out the location of the school. Is it in a high crime area? Glance at the manner of dress of other students. Do they care for their appearance? Are they soft spoken or loud and boisterous? Is there fighting and yelling in the halls and ignored by the school staff? This means that the teachers fear the students and look the other way. This is an important sign to look for when selecting how to get into a good high school.
9. Finally, inspect the condition of the inside of the school. Do the walls need painting? Are the lockers broken and lack keys? Are the bathrooms clean and the plumbing working? Are the stall walls all scribbled with nasty messages about other students and teachers?
If you exit your tour of each school with serious doubts, you might want to consider checking out a private school or religious schools. High School education that is not specifically geared to the child’s best interest can become a negative turning point in their life.
